Spring Craft Weekend AUCTION: Saturday, April 25, 2009

Jump to: Silent Auction ItemsLive Auction ItemsWatershed Center Auction ItemsBlind Auction at the Sunday Brunch

The silent and live auctions of major studio craft objects play an important role in the James Renwick Alliance Spring Craft Weekend fundraising activities. The auctions highlight the work of established and emerging artists from across the nations. These objects, which are not always easily available, are certainly works of art that will give years of enjoyment, and likely to hold their value, a desirable trait in these special times.

Proceeds from the auction are divided between the artist and the James Renwick Alliance, whose funds support activities at the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian Museum of American Art. Some artists volunteer to forego their portion of the proceeds, and many of our gallery caucus members forego their commissions, so your participation is critical to complement their generosity.  New for the auction this year is collaboration with artists affiliated with the Watershed Center for the Ceramics Arts, who are participating in both the live and silent auctions.

The public is cordially invited and welcome to join in the spring weekend activities. Tickets may be purchased separately for the gala where the silent and live auctions take place.  New, old, and returning members and those wanting to learn about studio craft art are always welcome at JRA events. View the invitation here (PDF)

People who cannot attend the gala in person are invited to place bids on the items shown below.  Please call the JRA administration office at admin@jra.org or call 301-907-3888 for details on entering your bids.

Watershed Center for Ceramic Art Auction items:

Watershed Center for Ceramic Arts, Edgecomb, Me., is well represented in the JRA auctions for Saturday night, April 25.

Eight members of the board of directors and one former resident have submitted pieces for the James Renwick Alliance auctions and are being considered for the curated live auction.  The Live auction, created by Lloyd Herman, will feature 18-20 items from the total number submitted.

Watershed is a residency program which includes artists with a range of experience and career levels, from students and emerging artists to those decades into their work, representing a range of aesthetics and processes, and a range of those using clay as a primary medium to those using clay as an adjunct to their principal material.

In Vortex No. 23, I continue the inward-looking theme of world-within-worlds through an architectonic approach to the vessel.  I am interested in the subtle nuances of the hidden, hollow, inner space, a requisite characteristic of both the clay vessel and architecture.  The technique of interlacing allows me to convey the concept of containment, at the same time, blurring the boundaries between in and out.  Multiple walls in Vortex No. 23 explore the inter-relatedness between walls and volume, and address issues of fragility and strength, density and porosity.

Blind Auction at the Sunday Brunch

Sunday, April 26, 2009

Twelve intriguing works of art by six studio craft artists from the Gateway Arts Community at Mt. Rainier, MD will be available for sale in a blind auction at the JRA awards brunch on Sunday morning, April 26, at the Marriott at Tysons Corner.  Blind bidding will start at $300 for each piece.  No one will know what the highest bid is, because the bidder will write a price on a piece of paper which is dropped into a box assigned to each piece.  When the box is opened, the highest bidder gets the piece.  The idea is to encourage competitive bidding.  Attendance at the brunch is by reservation only, but the brunch is open to the public by reservation.  Please download the invitation form or call the JRA administration office at 301-907-3888 to reserve your place.
