Exhibit displays work of 13 Korean-American metal artists and 25 Korean jewelry artists.  Lecture by exhibit curator/artist Komelia Okim on the work of 30 Korean artists. Open studios and demonstrations
Open studio demonstrations by artists in the Mt Rainier area.  Co-sponsored by the James Renwick Alliance.

Participants:  Red Dirt Studio (ceramics), Flux Studios (ceramics), Blue Fire Studio (ceramics) and Washington Glass School.  Showing at Blue Fire Studio:  Corcoran College of Art + Design ceramics and jewelry faculty show, and Studio 4903 (art jewelry). 

Admission:  Free, open to the public.

Red Dirt Studio, 3706 – 08 Otis Street, Mt Rainier, MD 20712
Demonstration by Margaret Boozer of printing processes employed in constructing her ceramic disc compositions, including embossing and slip transfer.  Red Dirt artists-in-residence, Kate Hardy and Jenna McCracken demonstrate processes integral to their respective installation and performance works.

Flux Studios, 3708 Wells Avenue, Mt Rainier, MD 27208
Novie Trump demonstrates processes involved in the making of her reliquaries, from the architectural construction with clay slabs to building etched surfaces and layering patinas, and the creation and assemblage of reliquary artifacts.  Laurel Lukaszewski demonstrates the creative process in making her three-dimensional ceramic sculptures based on line and movement. Also demonstrating at Flux Studios will be artists from Studio 4903: Gayle Friedman, Analya Cespedes, Beverly Tadeu.

Blue Fire Studio, 3700 Wells Avenue, Mt Rainier, MD 27208
Robert Devers demonstrates Majolica glaze painting on tiles and plates and gives a visual presentation on historical and contemporary Majolica.  Tamara Laird demonstrates hand-building techniques for ornamental garden sculptures.  The studio will host a show of work by the Corcoran College of Art + Design ceramics and jewelry faculties, and Studio 4903 jewelry artists. Ceramics:  Robert Devers, Tamara Laird, Adriana Baler, Catherine White, Timothy Wallace,
Matthew Grimes.  Jewelry:  Anya Pinchuk, Jimin Park. 

Washington Glass School, 3700 Otis Street, Mt Rainier, MD 20712
Tim Tate works on an interactive video and glass piece, and demonstrates use of the lost wax technique for casting glass.  Michael Janis demonstrates his use of sgrafitto on kiln-formed glass.  Erwin Timmers demonstrates use of deep relief dry plaster casting methods to form art objects using “green” glass. Elizabeth Ryland Mears demonstrates lampworking techniques used to create her 3D
glass sculptures.

James Renwick Alliance Symposium with Masters of Medium awardees
Nan Tucker McEvoy Auditorium, Reynolds Center, Smithsonian American Art Museum.  Symposium is free and open to the public.

Panel discussion on "My Life in Craft" by five master artists selected by members of the JamesRenwick Alliance to receive the JRA's biennial Masters of the Medium award, given to recognizeartists who demonstrate consummate craftsmanship and artistic expression in ceramics, fiber,glass, metal/jewelry or wood/furniture.  Panel moderator:  Michael Monroe, Director of CuratorialAffairs, Bellevue Arts Museum, Bellevue, Washington, and former curator-in-charge, RenwickGallery, Smithsonian American Art Museum.

James Renwick Alliance Spring Craft Weekend Gala and silent and live auctions
Gala dinner and dance with live and silent auctions of sculptural and functional objects in glass, ceramic, fiber, art jewelry/metal and wood/studio furniture made by American artists.  Proceeds from the auction support the JRA mission of building the contemporary craft collection of the RenwickGallery, education programs, and scholarship on 20th and 21st century American craft through post-graduate JRA Fellowships.

James Renwick Alliance concludes its Spring Craft Weekend events with presentation of Masters of the Medium and One-of-a-Kind awards.  2009 Master of the Medium awards will be given to: Warren MacKenzie - Ceramics; Norma Minkowitz - Fiber; Richard Marquis - Glass; June Schwarcz - Metal/Jewelry; and David Ellsworth - Wood/Furniture.  One-of-a-Kind award will be given to Lloyd Herman, Founding Director of the Renwick Gallery,Smithsonian American Art Museum, for his contributions and support of American craft and artists. 

Twelve intriguing works of art by six studio craft artists from the Gateway Arts Community at Mt. Rainier, MD will be available for sale in a blind auction at the JRA awards brunch.  Blind bidding will start at $300 for each piece.  No one will know what the highest bid is, because the bidder will write a price on a piece of paper which is dropped into a box assigned to each piece.  When the box is opened, the highest bidder gets the piece.  The idea is to encourage competitive bidding.

Habatat Galleries, Virginia presents an exhibition featuring influential artists who have taught at the influential Penland School of Crafts, located near Asheville, North Carolina.  This is the first exhibitionfor Penland in the Washington, DC area.  The show will feature work by artists who have made an impact on both Penland and the students they have taught there.  From an impressive and lengthy listof artist educators who have taught at the school, Habatat Galleries selected about 35 artists forinclusion in the exhibition.  Glass artists Richard Jolley and Tommie Rush will speak on their involvement with the Penland School of Crafts, its programs and the exhibition. Private event for JRA members and brunch attendees.
