Jacqueline Rice
2008 Craft Educator Award
Professor Jacquelyn Rice received her masters of fine arts from the University of Washington, Seattle, in 1970. She has pursued art as a teacher as well as a creator of ceramics and accompanying computer-printed textile designs.
She taught at the Rhode Island School of Design from 1977 to 2005. While at RISD, she served as department head of ceramics and dean of fine arts. In 1995 she received the RISD Alumni award for excellence in teaching. Prior to coming to Rhode Island, Rice taught at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and the Kansas City Art Institute.
Professor Rice has received three National Endowment grants, two as an individual fellow and another to curate “Clay” exhibition in 1983 at the RISD Museum. While at the University of Michigan, Rice received a Mellon grant for research of ceramic decals.
Her extensive travels took her to India where she lectured at the National Institute of Art and Design. Inspired by the textiles of India, she is collaborating with her husband Uosis Juodvalkis, an expert in computer technology and photography in developing a line of garments and scarves. Their collection is called Gild the Lily.
In February of 2002, Jacquelyn and Uosis traveled to Yunnan Province in China for one month, to serve as observers for the US China Arts Exchange Program at Columbia University, NYC. In addition to these travels, she has taught classes in ceramics in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.
Exhibiting and lecturing widely, her work is represented in private collections and museums. Rice has designed tableware for Grazia of Deruta Italy. Her work with tableware and linens were in “Objects for Use” at the American Craft Museum, New York, NY in 2002.
Current work can be seen at RISD Works, Providence RI, Dream Weaver in Florida, Gallery of Wearable Art in NYC, Origins in Santa Fe, and Changes in Portland Oregon. Gild the Lily collections are presented yearly at the American Craft Council Shows and at shows in Westchester and West Palm Beach.
