to receive
the JRA 2018
Chrysalis Award

Chrysalis Award Presentation
October 7, 2:00pm
American University Katzen Arts Center

Tim Tate Distinguished Artist Series Lecture to follow

Dean Allison creates mesmerizing portraits of people in glass. Through an innovative approach, which combines old and new techniques and materials, he literally creates three-dimensional photographs of ordinary people and captures their uniqueness through a multilayered glass casting process.

Allison states, “I am interested in understanding individuals through an analysis of subtle gesture, physical attributes and the immediate perceptions that those attributes spark. Glass is the perfect medium to exploit since it has the characteristics common to people; transparent, opaque, fragile, broken, sharp, incompatible, rough, polished and colorful.”

The James Renwick Alliance's $5,000 Chrysalis Award, designed to recognize and encourage emerging artists, will be presented at American University Museum’s Katzen Arts Center at 2:00pm on October 7, followed by a lecture given by Tim Tate as part of the JRA Distinguished Artist Series. The event is free and open to the public.

Dean Allison has just completed a three-year residency at Penland School of Crafts and is currently setting up his own studio in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. For further information on this year’s Chrysalis award-winning artist, please visit his website www.DeanAllison.net
