In honor of Veteran's Day, Google has engaged Air Force veteran and artist Jenn Hassin for today's "Google Doodle". Some may remember the last craft-related Google Doodle featuring Ruth Asawa in May 2019 in honor of Asian-American Pacific Islander month, but today, the doodle takes a different tone.
Hassin constructed the Doodle from actual military uniforms with at least one from each of the 10 branches, from the Vietnam War to today. "All were entrusted to me with the promise that I would do my best to honor our nation's military and veterans with their transformed uniforms," she told Google. "The final Doodle holds hundreds of rolled up pieces of paper that are made from these once worn, but now deconstructed, military uniforms."
In order to turn the scraps of military uniforms into paper, Hassin cuts her samples into tiny pieces and uses a Hollander beater to turn the uniforms into pulp, where she then screens the pulp into paper, allows it to dry and arranges the hand-made paper into her final art piece.
The Ceramic Arts 2021 Yearbook, a supplement to Ceramics Monthly and Pottery Making Illustrated, highlighted three past James Renwick Alliance awardees: Syd Carpenter, Michael Sherrill, and Richard W. James.
